I enjoyed knowing more about the history and the warlord politics that have continued on in that country for centuries. From the perilous roads of Afghanistan and being targeted by enemy gunships to the lush campus of Muklah and living in New York, Farivar tells his story which will make you proud to be an American, embarrassed to be an American, left in awe of a man whose story makes you grateful of being an American.

Whenever I read life stories like this, I’m amazed at the mullan of tragedy a person’s heart can handle. While I am still confused by the many factions and groups that exist and struggle there, I am slightly less ignorant now. It explores the history that sets the stage for the rise of the Taliban.
Farivar draws on his unique experience as a native Mullah, a former mujahideen fighter, and a longtime US resident to provide unprecedented insight into the ongoing collision between Islam and the West.

The big revelation to me was how this guy, who fought in the war, says that the American presence is actually vital to keep the balance and prevent the factions from exploding once again as soon as US troops withdraw.
