What does your zero-crossing detector look like? This simple circuit has now become the hardest circuit I’ve ever worked on I’m thinking that the voltage difference isn’t correct and that my probe is inducing a difference that allows the gate to be triggered for a very very brief moment.

One weird thing is that when I touch the line between pin 4 and the gate with a multimeter- sometimes the light flickers. The fade that you’re trying to achieve is not possible with this circuit or with whatever approach you are trying to follow here.
