Justicia secunda Vahl belonging to the family Acanthaceae is known as “Blood root” and “Sanguinaria” in Barbados and Venezuela respectively. The folkloric. Justicia secunda Vahl (Acanthaceae), a native tropical herbaceous plant originating from South America, is nowadays grown in other tropical or subtropical. Polyphenol extraction and characterization of Justicia secunda Vahl leaves for traditional medicinal uses.
Site du Cirad Annuaire des sites du Cirad. The process allowed a better leaf water-extraction of polyphenol compounds than the homemade extraction.
Vahll provides a possible molecular basis for earlier reports on the anti-sickling properties of anthocyanins from some Congolese plants and their use in the management of sickle cell disease by Congolese traditional healers.
Sickle cell disease or drepanocytosis is caused by the polymerisation of abnormal haemoglobin S when oxygen tension decreases. Justicia secunda is a plant used in Congo by Jehovah’s Witnesses, well known for their refusal of blood transfusions, against anaemia.
At each step of the pilot plant process, the co-products obtained were analyzed for total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents by the UV-vis spectrophotometric method. The beverage is usually obtained by boiling the plant in water.
Anthocyanins extracted from some Congolese plants used in traditional medicine against sickle cell disease have recently been shown to have anti-sickling activity in vitro. This lead to the changes in the jutsicia of red blood cells and anaemia. Emmel, Itano and osmotic fragility tests were used to test the effect of anthocyanin extracts from Justicia secunda leaves on haemoglobin S solubility and sickle cell membrane stability.
Anthocyanins from Justicia secunda were found to possess anti-sickling activity. These ions are bound to membrane proteins resulting in dehydration and loss of secuunda blood cell deformability and cell-to-cell adherence.
Industrial Crops and Products The solubility of deoxyhaemoglobin S increased and the osmotic fragility of drepanocytes decreased upon treatment with anthocyanin extracts. These findings suggest that anthocyanin extracts play a role in both stabilising jsticia red blood cell membrane and inhibiting polymerisation of haemoglobin S.
On a pilot plant scale, water extracts were processed using an extraction-concentration procedure achieved in a three-step process, including ultrasound-assisted water extraction followed by cross-flow microfiltration of the crude extract and its concentration by reverse osmosis.
Water extracts of Justicia secunda leaves are used by village communities in southern countries to prepare traditional medicines at home.
As the processing conditions were milder than for homemade preparations, the extract obtained was enriched in natural leaf flavonoids. Treated SS red blood cells recovered a normal, classical biconcave form with a radius of 3.
Publications des agents du Cirad. It has also been postulated that the red cells of patients with sickle cell disease contain a higher than normal concentration of calcium ions.
